BLOG 1: The Myth About Vaccination causing Autism

A  medical journal written in 1998 by Andrew Wakefield and colleagues suggested that vaccines had a connection with autism, then retracted in 2004 due to scientific and ethical flaws. This caused a controversy around MMR vaccine and autism. . Autism is a neurobehavioral disorder that comes about with spectrum of symptoms. Many studies over the years have shown that they are no correlation between vaccines and autism.

Many people put their hopes and faith in the discovery made by scientists, which is understandable as to why they find it difficult to trust them when they make mistakes that causes the loss of lives of people or mutate the DNA of people. Yet, people have to come to terms with the fact that mistakes are going to happen in life. Scientists are humans and they can make mistakes too (though not advisable when there are people’s lives on the line). There has been a lot of changes since the 90’s. There are new and also improved vaccines. Most healthcare personnel, if not all, are cautious. They observe and take actions when the patients show signs of adverse reactions, which are rarely dangerous.

BLOG 2: LIFE BEFORE VACCINES

No mother wants to lose her child(ren). There is a quote that says “You do not know pain until you have lost a child”. Gene Gangarosa recounts the pre-vaccine era where she lost five of her siblings (3 to pertussis and 2 to measles). They were 13 siblings altogether. Her mother was so devastated by the loss of her children, that even many years later, she spoke about it with a great deal of emotion. She remembers the summer outbreaks of polio, the crippled children who could no longer walk with limb-distorted limps. She remembers her own children’s horrible experience with measles. In short, she remembers all the terrible disease outbreaks that happened, the people that suffered and those that died. While she remembers them all, she believes that people have forgotten how the world was before the invention of vaccines.

It is the reason why some people get vaccinated because they knew of a time that vaccines did not exist and the terrible events that they faced  prior to vaccines, which is why it is important to be vaccinated.
